Wildebeest

A successful symbol of the African plains is the Wildebeest. In its migrating patterns and sheer numbers, the Wildebeest tends to dominate the landscape, evidence of its evolutionary success. Horns are present in both sexes, with an average spread of up to 20-25 inches. Unlike most antelope, the horns of the Wildebeest are not ribbed, but are instead rather smooth with a velvet-like texture in appearance. The Wildebeest skull is long and elegant.

Springbok
Antidorcas marsupialis

The Sprinbok skull in most respects is typically gazelle-like in construction. Compared to the Impala skull it is slightly smaller and more compact. The horns meet closely at the base where the ridges are thickest before extending up and hooking inward. Springboks are famous in Africa for their pronking or hopping behavior.

Ostrich Eggs
Struthio camelus

Although flightless, the Ostrich is the largest existing bird species. It is also one of the many characteristic animals of the great African plains. The skull shows large orbits and brain case with very delicate beak and mandibular bones. Due to their large size, Ostrich bones allow easy examination of avian morphology. Kalahari Desert Bush Men use the sturdy Ostich egg shells as canteens which can hold about 45 fluid ounces. The egg shell is about 7" long and is ivory in color. It has a lightly pitted but somewhat glossy surface.
