Smilodon fatalis was a distant member of the cat family that evolved remarkable killing adaptions not to be seen in any living species. Paleontologists have determined from its skeletal remains that this amazing cat was about the size of a lion, but built more powerfully in the forelimbs and paws which it used to pounce and grab a hold of its prey. The most distinctive feature of Smilodon was its huge recurved, dagger-like canines, which may have been used to stab or rip open its prey. Fossils of this great predator are known only from North and South America. Smilodon became extinct at the end of the Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. This museum quality reproduction is an accurate duplication of a fossil housed at the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. Each piece has been meticulously made and hand painted in our studios. It is copyrighted by the Museum who receives a percentage of the proceeds from each sale.
